ABTA has unveiled 12 destinations to watch in 2018 as part of its latest Travel Trends Report.
The destinations were chosen for a variety of reasons.
Some offer a unique travel experience or are hosting a special event next year, while some are now more easily accessible for British tourists.
The 12 destinations, in alphabetical order, are:~
Argentina
Arizona
British Columbia
Germany
Malta
Montenegro
Nepal
New Zealand
ԬRwanda
St Lucia
Sweden
Turkey
ABTA’s report also picked up on a taste for alternative destinations, partly due to concerns about over tourism.
It comes after 2017 saw locals in some cities protesting about the negative impacts of too many tourists.
ABTA’s research found that in 2018, 27% of holidaymakers are planning to visit a country they’ve never been to before and 32% are expecting to visit a new resort or city.
Value for money and increased awareness of responsible tourism are also set to shape holiday choices.
“Popular TV programmes like Blue Planet II have put sustainability issues firmly in the spotlight, increasing awareness of the impact that large numbers of visitors can have on some of the world’s most popular destinations,” said ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer.
“We expect these factors to inform people’s choices about where and how they holiday next year, with a greater demand for holidays to a wide range of alternative destinations.”
ABTA said many tour operators, hoteliers and destinations have made positive progress with sustainability
