Tourists spend more nights in Lithuania than in Latvia or Estonia.
According to EUROSTAT, the official statistical office of the European Union, in 2016 the number of overnight stays of tourists (local as well as foreign) who stayed in Lithuanian accommodation establishments, including rural tourism farmsteads, was the largest in the Baltic states and comprised 7 million, while in Estonia and Latvia this number amounted to 6.2 million and 4.4 million respectively.
Lithuania is noticeably ahead of the other Baltic states in terms of overnight stays of local tourists in all accommodation establishments. Last year, the number of overnight stays of local tourists amounted to 3.74 million in Lithuania, 2.2 million in Estonia, and 1.37 million in Latvia.
Statistics Lithuania provides the statistical data of accommodation establishments and rural tourism separately.
“ If we add up the data following the example of EUROSTAT, we will get approximately 10 per cent higher indicators of Lithuanian accommodation establishments and we will see the obvious advantage of our country over the other Baltic states, particularly in terms of the number of overnight stays of local tourists. Local tourism is a real standard-bearer on the Lithuanian tourism market,” notes Indrė Trakimaitė-Šeškuvienė, the Acting Director of the State Department of Tourism.
Local tourism comprises a half of the Lithuanian tourism market: 50.5 per cent.
