New runway

Flint Bishop Airport has reopened a second runway after a four-month, $9 million rehabilitation project that started earlier this year.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the renovations our team has made to the runway,” Airport Director Nino Sapone said in a news release from the airport on Tuesday, Sept. 1. “The project went really well, and we’re thrilled to have state-of-the-art runway upgrades for our pilots.”

Runway 9-27 runs east and west and upgrades to it include resurfacing, the addition of shoulders to meet new Federal Aviation Administration design specifications, and new LED runway lights and signs.

A federal grant paid for $8.1 million of the project cost with the remainder shared by the state and airport, a Bishop spokeswoman said.

LA Construction was the primary contractor on the work, which was also performed by subcontractors County Line Electric and Ace-Saginaw Paving.
