For the first time ever, a plane from SAS landed in the Faroe Islands. With a Faroese captain in charge it landed Sunday morning. The day also marks the first time in over 10 years back there is competition in the Faroese market.
“This is a historic day for Vagar Airport. We believe that the Faroese market with almost 300,000 international passengers is large enough that several airlines can work with the Faroe Islands as a destination, ” Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO at Vagar Airport says.
Since 2012, the airport has worked to convince foreign airlines to take a closer look at the Faeroes when looking at new destinations.
The population of 50,000 people in the Faroe Islands and the desire to travel is great among the population. In addition, the Faroese Government increased the money for VisitFaroeIslands significantly in recent years, to make the Faroe Islands more visible in Europe.
“It seems to VisitFaroeIslands have done their job well, because the Faroese travel industry has announced that there is record demand for travel to the islands. Faroe Islands has now received its first Michelin star, and the quality of experiences, hotels etc. have improved in recent years. There are also players who have announced that there will be more hotels coming years, so the future looks bright, ” Jákup Sverri Kass says.
